we are faceless.
our masks are everything and nothing
all at once.
A Song On The End Of The World - Czeslaw Milosz
On the day the world ends
A bee circles a clover,
A fisherman mends a glimmering net.
Happy porpoises jump in the sea,
By the rainspout young sparrows are playing
And the snake is gold-skinned as it should always be.
On the day the world ends
Women walk through the fields under their umbrellas,
A drunkard grows sleepy at the edge of a lawn,
Vegetable peddlers shout in the street
And a yellow-sailed boat comes nearer the island,
The voice of a violin lasts in the air
And leads into a starry night.
And those who expected lightning and thunder
Are disappointed.
And those who expected signs and archangels' trumps
Do not believe it is happening now.
As long as the sun and the moon are above,
As long as the bumblebee visits a rose,
As long as rosy infants are born
No one believes it is happening now.
Only a white-haired old man, who would be a prophet
Yet is not a prophet, for he's much too busy,
Repeats while he binds his tomatoes:
No other end of the world will there be,
No other end of the world will there be.

it is a store-bought disposable camera
that offers convenience and nothing more.
kirihara looks at it,
eyes a small corner of the yellow plastic chipped,
as if it had been violently thrown into the rubbish bin.
he wonders why it fascinates him so.
"yagyuu-senpai?"
the Gentleman looks up curtly
from his Agatha Christie short story collection
(Poirot Investigates),
sharpened gaze hidden behind reflective glasses
that are pushed up with a finger.
"what's this camera doing in the trash can?"
kirihara continues without missing a beat,
yagyuu's visual acknowledgement of his question
more than enough.
"niou-kun saw it in the locker room.
he threw it out."
that makes it even more intriguing,
a mystery to be solved
(kirihara thinks with a slight grimace that it's yagyuu's fault,
reading too much Agatha Christie)
but he leaves it at that,
shrugs
and says something about
going to thrash some freshmen in a practice game.
getting involved with anything related to niou masaharu was dangerous.
yagyuu hiroshi is a... minor exception.
yagyuu goes back to reading,
back straight
and legs tucked neatly under his chair.
niou hates those disposable cameras
because they are cheap and offer nothing but convenience
he hates it when there is no detailed process
that results in a beautiful piece of work
that seems effortlessly thrown together
he remembers that niou's favourite subject
(or at the very least, the subject he is most proficient in)
is mathematics.
and that niou is everything and nothing that people see him as.
they don't even realise
how apt it is for them to call him
The Trickster.Labels: writings

there was a feeling of defeatism (a fleeting moment)
there was a feeling of hope and drive and gratitude
there was tennis
there was curry and shrimps and many coupons
there was three-flavoured ice creams and pink chairs
there was

it is
graduation
you see
the familiar
(but still strangely distant)
streak of platinum hair
you don't go over
(no need to
look for trouble)
it's already found you
in a vicious glint of turquoise
ya~gyuu-
you've grown accustomed to
the words spoken with a razor's edge
and have stopped flinching in response
since the fourth game of doubles
you two played together
you try not to go back to
the times when
he vandalised your table (and locker. lockers.)
and stapled obscene messages
to your assignments
when you weren't aware
(teachers only looked the other way because
they know, think, you can't possibly be the one
who wrote trash like that)
if only they realise
you've been wearing his face
everyday
to the point where
the line disappears
and there is no more Niou and Yagyuu
but only NiouandYagyuu
it is
graduation
'tennis next year?'
a feral grin
'of course.'
spring comes,
again.

jm got me moonlight cookies :)
There are
Things that
Yagyuu Hiroshi
Does not
Understand.
Although these
Things are
Very few
And far
Between.
There is
Nothing that
Niou Masaharu
Cannot eventually
Understand.
Although there
Are instances
(anomalies, he
calls them)
Where he
Is unable
To grasp
What those
Things mean.
Yagyuu is fascinated with things he does not understand.
Niou is fascinated with anomalies that should not exist.
They are
Therefore both
Fascinated, secretly
With the
Anomaly/Black hole
That is
Their Doubles
Partner.
Platinum Is A Catalyst
it is spring
wars begin in spring, you think
they are fought
not with guns, tanks and dirty trenches
but with rackets, nets and a sheer intent
to destroy the people on the other side of the court
and you realise
there is no better way to win
no surer way to win
than being with the Devil
but he says
No, you become the Devil
and that's how it all starts
"Game, set, match.
Won by Rikkai Dai Fuzoku
Niou-Yagyuu pair"
it should be Yagyuu-Niou pair
but you who is Niou, and Niou who is now Yagyuu
don't think about it because
it is Niou-Yagyuu pair
(the line doesn't blur,
it disappears entirely)
